ENGL 1010 - English 1010 Summer 2011
In English 1010 I was required to write a rhetorical analysis, an annotated bibliography and a synthesis. All of these assignments were the basis for a research paper which would have followed the same topic as our last two assignments. I chose to write about obesity in america here are my papers.

My reflections through this semester all include the same
writing environment. I have had the same writing environment since high school.
I sit in a silent environment with my friend helping me write my essay and proof
read with me. I make this environment whenever I have to write something, this
is because it has no distractions and I can focus on writing. In every in class
reflection I state that my working conditions and state of mind are perfect. I
tell myself I have to finish and there are no other options. I also stated that
more practice will help me create a structure for this type of writing and help
me write better.
The only changes in my in class reflections were the time I had to write
the essays and how much interest I still had. Since my writing methods and
strategies were the same through all the papers I wrote the only difference is
how much time I could put into the essay and the quality. With some of the
longer assignments I had to do I had more bad things to say about the paper
because I didn’t get to refine them enough to meet the quality I want.
I didn’t need to change my writing habits because they work for me. On
the synthesis essay I started watching television while I wrote because I
‘checked out’ and the quality of this essay is not very good. I started changing
my writing habits from a way that worked for me to a distraction filled
environment.
During this semester I did a few things to advance my writing abilities.
I wrote and proof read all of my papers with my friend who has been writing for
8+ years who helped me with my process and structure. I also went to the library
and the writing center to get advice on how to best accomplish my goals in a
writing assignment. The last thing I did to advance my writing abilities was
reading papers that were samples of the assignment I had to
write.
I was very thorough for most of my essays and the practice for
writing these essays was very helpful. Analyzing sources was good practice for
the future so that when I write a research paper I can analyze a source while I
am reading it and see if I want to use it. Practicing finding claims in articles
and paraphrasing them was very helpful because I am going to have to use in
future classes. Learning how to write a better summary was very helpful because
summarizing an article helps me understand it more and organize my thoughts on
the topic.
Writing a synthesis assignment after the class was over was not
very helpful. This was not helpful because the peer review process really helped me organize my thoughts on
how to revise my drafts. The in class reflections were not very helpful and the
reflection essay was not helpful. These two things weren’t helpful because they
didn’t help me advance as a writer or as a student since the things gone over in
the reflections aren’t something that I needed to reflect
on.
The researching and citation methods we learned in English 1010
will help me in research papers in future classes. I learned more about how to
adapt to a situation like going into a class where assignments aren’t accepted
late at all. This is a helpful thing to learn because life is going to be me
having to conform to other people’s rules and dealing with them. I grew a bit as
a writer and as a student as I do with every class I take and I will be ready
for all new challenges.
