FA 1010 -- Exploring Art
In exploring art I was required to create a sculpture out of found objects that are a non-traditional media for sculptures.
Title Computer Science Student
Dimensions - 11 x 13 inches.
Items used
1. Ram – Legs and arms
2. Sound card – torso
3. Bios chip – heart
4. CPU – head
5. Wires – hair
6. Transistors – eyes
Assembly - I got the pieces for my my sculpture by taking
hardware out of an old obsolete computer and some spare computer parts I had. I
then constructed the student starting with the legs (ram) which I taped
together. I then attached the torso (soundcard) to the legs with tape. I then
added the head (CPU) and hair (wires) with tape. I finished by gluing the heart
(bios chip) and eyes (transistors) to their respective areas.
Thought process - I thought that I should make a representation of how
people view someone with a computer science major. By making the student out of
computer parts it represents him being one with the computer. It
appears he can communicate and think on the same level as the computer. Every
time I tell someone who doesn’t know much about computers I’m a computer science
major they think I am some kind of computer shaman who can magically fix their
various computer issues. The placement of some pieces is symbolic as well. The
CPU is the piece of hardware that controls the computer, allows it to “think” so
to speak and is placed as the student’s head. The bios chip is the rom memory of
the computer that keeps the set of rules that the computer follows to start and
operate. Without the bios chip the computer can’t start and function there for I
chose it for the heart.
Challenges- I tried to use glue for most of the sculpture to make it look
cleaner than tape but because of the uneven surfaces and lack of clamps I was
unable to make the pieces stick with the glue.
Feelings about work – The sculpture turned out pretty well considering
the lack of tools and materials I had. If I could have made any changes I would
have had a soldering iron or clamps so that I could have made the finished
product a lot cleaner and coherent.
